What You’ll Need During the Process (Documents):

Applicant's birth certificate

Proof of parents' U.S. citizenship (such as a passport or certificate of naturalization)

Parents' marriage certificate (if applicable)

Evidence of legal residency in the U.S. (such as a Green Card) (if through parent Naturalization)

Proof of U.S. Citizen Parent’s physical presence in the USA prior to your birth (5 years with 2 of those years after age 14, if you were born after 1986) (if through Parent Citizenship prior to your birth)

Why Acquired Citizenship is Important:

This process confirms U.S. citizenship for those born outside the country to a U.S. citizen parent; or, U.S. Citizenship to children who are Green Card holders, living with a Green Card holder parent in the U.S. when they Naturalize prior to child’s 18th birthday. It requires meeting legal residency requirements and proving the parent met the transmission of citizenship criteria at the time of birth or Naturalization.
